Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, greeted the participants of the National Students Forum "New Legislative Initiatives and Bologna process in Ukrainian Educational Dimension" that is being held in Kyiv.

During the forum, the active members of the students´ life from all the regions of Ukraine discussed the Law on Student Self-Government adopted in February.

Co-author of the Bill, M. Tomenko stated that the Law extended the authorities and functions of student self-government bodies, fixed the quota of student representation in the collegiate bodies of higher education establishments, specified the issues concerning establishment and functioning of the student self-government bodies, forms and areas of their activity. According to the Law, the students self-government bodes receive 10% quota in the academic council of the higher educational establishment hence it facilitates consideration of the students´ interests in the course of adoption of different decisions in the educational institution.

M. Tomenko is convinced that strengthening of the student self-government enables the real influence on the activity of the higher education institution.

The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine having analyzed the experience of those educational institutions that have already successfully implemented the system of local self-government set it as an example for the rest of the higher education establishments.
